Hale Kilinahe: The Journal
There's this commercial. For what precisely, I don't remember. But the opening line goes like this: "conventional wisdom states that everything has already been seen, done, or heard." Truer words have never been spoken. At first, I thought the phenomenon was reserved for r&b groups designed for the sole purpose of making money, but then I was watching CMT the other night. Within twenty minutes, I saw two remakes: that old seventies ballad "Falling" and the Kenny Loggins and Stevie Nicks duet. All the major commercials these days feature old songs instead of catchy pre-fab jingles. Are we just collectively nostalgic, or are we just suffering from one big case of writer's block? There are a thousand one compilations on CD from a thousand one different eras. Everything old is new again. I suppose life runs in circles like this, too. Sometimes I like work. This is not one of these times, unfortunately. Things were going okay before I took this video job, actually. I was warned ahead of time about my boss, Mega, and not just by one or two people. She's had five assistants in a year. She drove one to actually threaten her life once. I'm supposed to get a cushy raise, but I go on maternity leave in a little over a month, so does that even do me any good? I could deal with the bad pay if I didn't find myself doing her job for her, too. Meanwhile, I'm really enjoying this whole wife gig. We get along even better than we ever did as cohabitators. It feels very comfortable and secure. Imminent mommyhood isn't so scary when you have help. We've been playing "A Very Special Christmas 3" at work lately. It's so cool. I'm thinking of buying it, and I rarely buy Christmas music. It's got a version of "Ave Maria" sung by Chris Cornell from Soundgarden that gives me chicken skin. |
