Hale Kilinahe: The Journal

DECEMBER 27, 1997

I was just thinking about Marilyn Manson today.

He doesn't scare me or bother me. In fact, if you ask me, he's pretty brilliant. He takes the oldest marketing trick in the book and uses it to obtain unimaginable wealth and power. It goes way back to Jerry Lee Lewis, on through Alice Cooper, to Ozzy Osbourne. Scare and piss off the parents, make millions. Pure genius.

I'm stoked about this daughter thing. From just my observation, I think girls are much, much easier. Especially with the kind of mom I think I'll be. I'll be a really huggy-kissy kind of parent. I hope. My mom was always involved and concerned, but she wasn't very outwardly affectionate until I moved away. That's not bad or good; just different from how I'll be. The best parents have learned from their parents, I think.

Did I tell you about my Christmas presents? I got a South Park shirt. South Park is a series on Comedy Central and it's the latest thing. Everybody at work is obsessed with it, quoting it to each other all day long. Jaimee got me the shirt. We got lots of money. A couple of picture frames. The piece de resistance was a beautiful handmade quilt from Ry's grandmother. It must have taken years for her to do, but it's for the baby. I want to write her a nice thank-you note, but neither of us can write Japanese, so I guess I should just write one and have Dad translate. Our friend Greg also got me a package of receiving blankets in nice, non-gender specific colors. Now that we know it's a girl, though, I'm gonna stock up on the frilly stuff.

Oh, yes. Work still sucks. Two more weeks. I'm about to plunge headfirst into endless days of diaper-changing and nursing, one day flowing seamlessly into the next, fatigue my only friend, and that will be joy compared to work. No, I'm exaggerating. I'm just sick of the feeling that I'm geeting the eensy little end of the stick.

My wonderful husband went Karaoke-ing last night with the old Ka Leo crew. I had to work until nine, so I didn't get to go, but I went to the wrap-up party at Zippy's afterword. We had met Greg on Christmas day for lunch, and it was lovely to see him again. Greg is even crankier and more cynical than me. It doesn't seem like he's been gone for six months. He was Ryan's managing editor for most of the two years of Ryan's editorship. I guess the whole experience bonded them all in some weird way, like the way a bunch of war veterans ramble endlessly about their trials. Del, one of the truest Ka Leo veterans, was there. He was there for years. I actually don't know Del that well, but he's the kind of guy who could be anyone's best friend. William briefly interrupted his stay on the big island to come to the shindig. I actually am really glad when Ryan goes out without me. He works so hard that he doesn't have time for relationships, but it's so important.
